Sacha Baron Cohen has faced lawsuits from college students and Kazakhstanis, as well as accusations of sexism and homophobia, but now the man better known as Bruno in some parts of the world is being threatened by a terrorist group.
In Cohen’s latest film, Bruno the gay fashionista tells a suspected Palestinian terrorist leader that he “wants to be famous” and needs ‘high profile’ suicide bombers to kidnap him as publicity. After a little confusion and a seemingly insulting remark about the leader’s ‘king’, Osama Bin Laden, Bruno is told, in no uncertain terms, to leave.
The al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades are a group based in the West Bank and thought to be responsible for numerous suicide bombings inside Israel. The group recently released a statement regarding their inclusion in the hit film. “We reserve the right to respond in the way we find suitable against this man. The movie was part of a conspiracy against the al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades,” says the statement.
While some reports indicate Cohen has increased security around himself and his family after the group’s statement, the man interviewed for the film said that he will file a lawsuit against Cohen and that the actor has endangered his life.
The Times reports that Ayman Abu Aita, the ‘leader’ interviewed in the film, has hired a lawyer and said ”[Cohen], I think he is not a man. He is not saying the truth about me. He lied.”
According to the Times report, Abu Aita’s lawyer, Mr Abu Ahmad, said that the film could make his client an Israeli target and that the association with homosexuality could result in his death by the Palestinians.
“This joke is very dangerous,” Ahmad told the Times. “We are not in the United States, we are not in Europe, we are in the Middle East and the world operates differently here.”
In an interview with David Letterman, Cohen said he found the terrorist leader through a contact at the CIA and that he hired a former bodyguard of Enrique Iglesias to conduct the faux-interview.
